The Essence of Punk Visual Report:
I am finally proud to announce my dissertation ‘The Essence of Punk’. Publishing my visual report has been a standout highlight during my time at university studying fashion Communication & Promotion, as well as the outcomes that have come with it. Throughout this year filled with research, drive and testing, I have developed a visual strategy for Levi’s to reconnect with a punk consumer, to celebrate, educate and spread awareness of punk values to build a better future. Also, I created an event at the Bodega to prove this! This idea for my report came from inspiration behind my parents careers in the music industry in the 70s-80s. My Dad was in a band called ‘The Late Show’ whilst my mum was a model at the time for various magazines, but later went onto manage Nomis studio with my Dad after the breakup of The Late Show. My parents were working with bands such as The Clash, The Cure, Adam & The Ants, Siouxsie & The Banshees and many more artists. I have always been inspired by parents and wanted to understand what inspired them to create this brilliant hidden career that I have only recently found out about. This project is a passion project back to them. The problem I needed to solve was “How can I spread awareness, whilst celebrating the values of the 70’s punk movement and how could these values impact the future of fashion. I want to connect to both consumers who experienced the 70’s as well as those who now have adapted and use these current punk values as a stepping stone to impact the future. I created a big idea of celebrating the 50th anniversary in 2026 to celebrate the ‘Ramones’ first punk gig in the UK, where they rocked Levi’s and helped revolutionise punk fashion. Levi’s will celebrate this iconic impact and will educate individuals on the punk values, building a reconnection to empower rebellion against pressing changes. I created a start. My outcomes described the importance of music through my outcome. This campaign allows Levi’s to grow to help reconnect with the punk consumer. I want to say a massive thank you to all of the lectures that supported me throughout this project who came to my event Chris MacDonald Matt Gill Claire Phipps (She/ her) Christopher Laird Hollie Bellis as well as Jay Harris for supporting my project throughout. Also I want to say a massive thank you to everybody who came to my event and was involved in my film, as well as the team who helped me bring my event together and my film.
